What is the idea of Dr. Jose Rizal of nationalism?

Jose Rizal (1861-1896), was a Filipino doctor and novelist who was an early leader of the Filipino movement for independence from Spain. He travelled to Europe and while there wrote novels exposing the evils of the Spanish colonial government and Filipino society. He returned home to Manila in 1892 and founded the Philippine League, a secret association devoted to modernizing the colony. Eventually he was arrested and executed in 1896 by firing squad.
