Why can't you look at the whole of any matter but only the pieces within it?

It's easier to solve a problem if you break it down into manageable pieces, not so overwhelming and daunting as looking at the whole and trying to solve it as a whole. Just like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. You first have to pick out the edge pieces, then find all the pieces of the same color, etc..
